Orokonui Ecosanctury

Just 20 minutes from downtown Dunedin you will find Orokonui Ecosanctuary, an inspirational addition to any itinerary. The 307 hectare Ecosanctuary is the only predator free area of native bush in the South Island and is home to some of New Zealand’s most fascinating and rare forest wildlife including the curious native parrot (kaka), Otago’s jewelled gecko, rifleman, and the South Island saddleback to name a few. The re-introduction of many birds, reptiles and plants that had been lost from the area, including kiwi and South Island robin, is also underway. This safe haven provides visitors with an exceptional experience where they will encounter New Zealands native flora and fauna in a protected and natural environment.

The Ecosanctuary is EXCLUSIVELY OPEN for GUIDED PREVIEW TOURS and bookings are essential. For all ages and abilities. The tours describe the intricate world of Otago’s coastal forest and its inhabitants.
