Take the train!

One of the prettiest rail journeys in New Zealand is the stretch between Oamaru and Dunedin. And one of the few opportunities to enjoy the trip will take place on Sunday November 18 2008 when you take your seat on the Taieri Gorge Railway excursion train and make the journey to the Network Waitaki Victorian Fete in Oamaru.

The trip offers the chance to travel in excursion and heritage carriages pulled by a diesel locomotive.

The train winds its way along Otago Harbour then climbs into the hills to pass through the Mihawaka Tunnel. Passengers will have the opportunity to view the coastline and seascapes not seen from any road. As the railway winds its way high above Blueskin Bay, Warrington and past Seacliff and Karitane it affords some of the most delightful views in the country.

From Palmerston the track levels out and heads along the coast past Shag Point and Moeraki, and the rolling farmland hills and market gardens south of Oamaru.
